Overview
The United States is the second most popular study destination for New Zealand students, after Australia.  During the 2017/18 academic year, 1,785 New Zealand students chose to study in the United States – an increase of 34% over the past five years.  Most of this increase is attributed to students pursuing undergraduate degrees and Optional Practical Training studies related to their academic field after their degree studies.
Although California, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Hawaii are currently the most popular states for study, New Zealand students study in all 50 U.S. states and at more than 450 institutions.

Sub-Sectors
The opportunity to play sport on campus is a key driver for undergraduate students.  New Zealand is a top-10 sending country for student athletes to the U.S. and sends the second most student athletes to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) per capita.  More than 200 New Zealanders studying in the U.S. are NCAA Division I and II athletes.  The top sports for New Zealand student athletes are soccer basketball, rowing, swimming and tennis.
Graduate students are attracted to studying in the U.S. to pursue law, business management and advanced science degrees.

EducationUSA New Zealand suggests it is important to engage early with EducationUSA offices and be aware of school holidays/examination periods.  The best times to reach New Zealand students and counselors are March-August.  Many schools host careers nights June-August.  EducationUSA can assist with the promotion of webinars but due to challenging time zones it is recommended that these sessions are pre-recorded.
